The Science Behind Hummed

We don't guess, we follow the research. Our protocols are built on a comprehensive analysis of 85+ peer-reviewed studies in brainwave entrainment and vibroacoustic therapy.

Three Modalities

How Sound Becomes Therapy

Hummed uses three distinct evidence-based audio modalities, each with unique mechanisms and clinical applications.

Binaural Beats

When two slightly different frequencies are presented to each ear through headphones, the brain perceives a third "beat" at the difference frequency. For example, 250 Hz in the left ear and 253 Hz in the right creates a perceived 3 Hz delta beat, matching the brainwave frequency associated with deep sleep.

Binaural beats are the most extensively researched auditory brainwave entrainment method, with clinical trials demonstrating benefits for pain reduction, anxiety, meditation, and cognitive performance. They require headphones for the effect to work, as each ear must receive a distinct frequency.

  • Used in 14 of our 19 tracks as the primary or secondary therapeutic signal
  • Carrier tone: 250 Hz (optimal range per research: 200-400 Hz)
  • Most pleasant for extended listening sessions (20-60 minutes)
  • Requires headphones for the binaural effect

Isochronic Tones

Isochronic tones are evenly spaced pulses of sound that turn on and off at a target frequency. Unlike binaural beats, the rhythmic pulsing is directly audible, you can hear and feel the rhythm. Research shows isochronic tones produce 15% stronger cortical activation than binaural beats.

A key advantage: isochronic tones work without headphones, making them accessible for vibroacoustic device delivery. Hummed uses isochronic tones strategically in tracks where stronger entrainment is needed or where binaural beats play a secondary role.

  • 15% stronger cortical activation than binaural beats
  • Work without headphones (speakers and vibroacoustic devices)
  • Used in respiratory, anti-inflammatory, and ADHD focus tracks
  • Sine-wave shape for comfort during extended sessions

Vibroacoustic Therapy

Vibroacoustic therapy delivers low-frequency sound vibrations (20-120 Hz) that can be physically felt in the body. These frequencies target specific physiological responses: 40 Hz supports neurological function, 90 Hz stimulates anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, and 115 Hz targets musculoskeletal pain pathways.

While ideally experienced through specialized vibrating devices (chairs, mats, beds), Hummed delivers vibroacoustic frequencies through strong bass synthesis that can create perceptible vibrations even through headphones.

  • 40 Hz: Validated for respiratory therapy and neurological support
  • 90 Hz: Stimulates anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 production
  • 115 Hz: Targets musculoskeletal anti-inflammatory pathways
  • Present in 15 of 19 tracks as primary or supporting therapy

Five Brainwave Frequencies

Each frequency band corresponds to distinct brain states and therapeutic applications.

Frequency Band Range Target Conditions Key Research Finding Example Track
Delta 0.5 – 4 Hz Deep Sleep, Insomnia 3 Hz delta promotes slow-wave sleep onset and restorative sleep architecture Track 1A: Delta Dreams
Theta 4 – 8 Hz Meditation, Pain, Relaxation 6 Hz theta induces meditative states within 10 min; 5 Hz reduced pain NRS from 5.6 to 3.4 (p<0.001) Track 2A: Theta Flow
Alpha 8 – 13 Hz Stress, Mood, Anxiety 10 Hz alpha bridges relaxation and alertness, supporting creativity and calm focus Track 5A: Calm Mind
Beta 13 – 30 Hz ADHD, Sustained Attention 14 Hz beta supports sustained attention and emotional regulation in ADHD protocols Track 8A: Focus Protocol

What the Evidence Shows

NRS 5.6 → 3.4

5 Hz theta binaural beats reduced chronic pain scores from 5.6 to 3.4 on the Numeric Rating Scale, with statistical significance at p<0.001.

Chronic pain clinical trial, theta frequency protocol

87% → 95%

40 Hz gamma binaural beats improved memory recall scores from 87% to 95% (p=0.003), demonstrating significant cognitive enhancement.

Tinnitus Habituation

12 months of daily spectrally shaped listening produced significant reduction in tinnitus loudness and cortical activity in the tinnitus frequency region (Okamoto et al., 2010, PNAS).

Fractal Tones

6-month trial of Widex Zen fractal tones showed measurable reduction in Tinnitus Handicap Inventory scores, aperiodic tonal content prevents cortical pattern-matching and tolerance buildup.

What the Research Shows, and Doesn't

We believe in full transparency. While clinical outcomes for specific applications are promising, the underlying mechanism of brainwave entrainment remains debated in the scientific community.

A 2023 systematic review found that only 5 of 14 rigorous EEG studies confirmed frequency-following entrainment, while 8 contradicted it. This means: we know sound therapy produces measurable clinical benefits (pain reduction, improved sleep, enhanced cognition), but the exact mechanism by which it works is not fully established.

This is not unusual in medicine, many accepted treatments work through mechanisms that aren't completely understood. What matters is that the clinical outcomes are real, reproducible, and statistically significant. We design our protocols based on what the research has proven to work, and we're transparent about what remains uncertain.

Where research is uncertain, we say so. That's what separates evidence-based practice from marketing.

Safety & Contraindications

Your safety is our priority. Please review the following information before using Hummed.

Do NOT use if you have: epilepsy, seizure disorders, or musicogenic seizure history; cardiac arrhythmias or pacemakers; severe anxiety, bipolar disorder, or untreated mental health conditions; or are pregnant (limited safety data). Individuals under 18 should use only with parental guidance and healthcare provider approval.

Do NOT use while driving, operating machinery, or performing safety-critical tasks. Do not use while bathing or in water. Do not use alone if prone to severe emotional reactions.

Stop immediately if you experience headache, dizziness, emotional distress, or discomfort. Discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider. Individual results vary.

No. These audio programs are designed to provide relaxation, wellness support, and potential symptom management through auditory brainwave entrainment. They are NOT medical treatments and should not replace professional medical care. Always consult your healthcare provider before using for specific health conditions.

Tracks are mastered to -14 LUFS with peaks no higher than -3 dBFS and a minimum 10 dB dynamic range. Listen at a comfortable volume, the therapeutic effect comes from the frequency, not the loudness. Most tracks are designed for 60-75 dB listening levels.
